What actually matters when choosing a photo book maker
Most comparisons stop at price. After 20+ years of printing, we think these five things decide whether you'll love the finished book:
- How the editor handles a big photo dump. A wedding or a two-week trip easily means 500+ photos. Sorting them by hand is where most people give up.
- Binding. In a normal book, a panorama or group shot loses its middle to the fold. A layflat album opens completely flat.
- Paper. Photographic paper, printed pages and synthetic pages look and age very differently.
- Pages included and what extra pages cost. A low starting price with only a few pages can end up costing more.
- Delivery time and help. This matters most when the book is a gift with a deadline.

1. The editor: where the biggest difference is
This is the part you'll spend your time in, so we've given it the most space.
Prolab Smart Editor

Odd Giraffe is design-first. You browse a large catalogue of more than 600 ready designs grouped by occasion, pick one, and place your photos into its frames page by page. This works well if you love a particular look and have a small, already-chosen set of photos. With a big photo dump, you'll be doing the selecting and arranging yourself.
Whitebook
Whitebook is the closest to Prolab in approach. You upload first, and its AI builder arranges the photos with a real-time 3D preview. It also offers free professional edits and says its team can build the book for you. You create an account with a mobile OTP after uploading. Its FAQ notes that dark or blurry originals will print that way, so choosing good photos is still up to you.
Zoomin and Photojaanic
Both give you a size, a theme and a template to fill. Photojaanic offers an auto-fill option and uploads from social media accounts. Both also sell a paid design service if you'd rather not do it yourself.
Bottom line: if choosing and arranging photos is the part you dread, Prolab's Smart Editor removes the most work. If you already have 30 favourite photos and just want a pretty cover, a design-first editor is perfectly fine. And if you want control over every margin and font, Prolab's Pro Editor is built for exactly that.
2. Layflat: why the binding matters
In a standard bound book, the centre fold swallows part of any photo that spreads across two pages. That's usually the group photo, the mandap or the mountain view. A layflat album opens completely flat, so a double-page spread reads as one seamless image.
Prolab's layflat albums have 100% flat pages with no centre gutter. They're printed on archival Fujifilm silver halide paper (true photographic paper, not ink on paper) with thick pages. Sizes run from 6"×6" to 15"×12". Zoomin and Photojaanic also sell layflat books. On the Odd Giraffe and Whitebook product pages we reviewed, layflat binding wasn't specified.
3. Paper and build
- Prolab photo books: every page is non-tearable, spill-safe synthetic paper, bound in a laminated hardcover, so the book survives little hands, spilled drinks and years of flipping. You also choose your print quality, Standard or Premium, both with vivid, true-to-life colours and smooth skin tones. Large books come with a dust jacket, printed box or jute bag.
- Prolab layflat albums: archival Fujifilm silver halide photographic paper with thick, 100% flat pages.
- Odd Giraffe: 250gsm matte pages and a 3mm hardcover with a 170gsm silk finish.

4. Price: honest numbers
Prolab is not the cheapest photo book in India, and we won't pretend otherwise. If budget is the priority, Zoomin (from ₹159) and Photojaanic (from ₹419 before tax and shipping) cost far less. For premium hardcover books, the gap is smaller:

Who each brand is best for
